REPORT
Recognition and Rewards Seen as More Effective than Cash

In a study conducted in the Fall of 2005, a cross-section of managers in various businesses who use reward and recognition programs was asked to assess the effectiveness of cash and non-cash rewards.(1)

Overall, managers express a preference for non-cash programs. They view them as more important, more effective, and generally superior for achieving the specific organizational objectives listed in the questionnaire. The leading specific non-cash incentives are, in order, employee recognition, gift certificates, merchandise incentives, work-life benefits, special events, and individual travel.

Studies have shown that employee reward and recognition programs that utilize non-cash incentives can be perceived by employees as more valuable than those offering monetary rewards alone.
